Chromebook FAQs
What to do if my Chromebook is damaged, broken, won't power on, etc...
For any and all Chromebook issues, please bring your Chromebook in to the tech office at your earliest opportunity. This allows us to get your device repaired and back out to you that much faster. Depending on the issue, we can either repair it within a few minutes or allow you the use of a loaner while we evaluate/repair your device.
Make sure to report exactly what happened so we can get your device repaired as quickly as possible.
REMEMBER
The less information you provide or by not being truthful about damage, the longer it will take to diagnose/fix.

A good suggestion for technology is - "When in doubt, bring it in. Better to have us look at it and find nothing or need minor repairs than put it off or hide it and have to pay for a new one. - Brian, Tech Office"
Examples of when to bring the Chromebook in:
- Stolen (report this ASAP)
- Lost (report this ASAP)
- Blank Screen
- Broken Cases
- Broken, damaged or missing keys
- Cracked Screens
- Doesn't Charge
- Doesn't Power Up
- Dropped / Knocked Over
- Spills
What if my student forgets to bring their Chromebook?
- If a student forgets to bring their Chromebook to school, the school has a small number of "loaner Chromebooks" available to check out before school.
- Loaners are on a "first come, first serve" basis and available in the Tech Office after 7:30am, Monday - Friday.
- It will be the student’s responsibility to return the Chromebook to the Tech office no later than 3:30pm daily before they leave for home.
- Failure to return a "loaner" Chromebook the day it is checked out can result in the student account being locked out until the loaner is returned. Continual instances of students not returning loaner Chromebooks on time will result in that student no longer being allowed to check out loaners.
Failure to return loaned Chromebooks or excessive use of the loaner system can result in disciplinary actions.
Loaner Chromebooks not returned will result in your account being locked and a possible referral.
Can my student bring their own computer to school?
Currently, students may not bring their own computers to school, as the district network is not configured to support a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). There would need to be a district policy change as well as network changes made in order to facilitate the use of personal computers.
What security measures are in place to make sure the computers are used appropriately?
- A filtering system is in place and the system works both at school and at home. It limits students from accessing inappropriate sites.
- You also have the option of limiting any social media sites by letting either Mr. Hurtado or the school Technical Office know.
- The school monitors all student activity.
Where can my student get access to the internet after school?
Students may access the internet from any UUSD school site. There are also many public places around town where students can access free internet.
What happens if my student damages/loses their Chromebook?
- Each Chromebook will be issued at the start of the school year with a protective hard case, a padded soft case and a charger in its own padded soft pouch. Normal wear and tear is expected, but any damage or loss due to negligence or abuse will either be repaired or replaced at the cost to the student. The cost of the repair will depend on which part of the computer is damaged (For example - a damaged screen would cost approximately $35.00 to replace while an upper chassis replacement can cost upwards of $56.00 depending on damage).
- There is also an optional insurance plan available for a limited time at the beginning of each school year.
